Aboriginal Students leading the way in learning language

Last year Milly Evans and Kylah Carson helped create a digital learning resources to support the education of other students learning common words in the different local Aboriginal languages. This digital resource is now used by all classes within the school and the wider school community. The aim of this project was to acknowledge, celebrate and promote the diverse range of languages and history students and families bring to the school community. The project was recognised for its significant contribution to the education of student in being nominated in the Aboriginal Languages and History category of the 2018 PALS Awards. RRKAC was able to support Milly and Kylah through our Community Sponsorship Fund to attend the awards ceremony in Perth, where the project was successful in winning the 2018 PALS Aboriginal Language and History Award.

This year, Baynton West Primary School and Class 10 have undertaken another project as part of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries PALS initiative. Aboriginal students have developed a video series, sharing and teaching their culture through the telling and recording of stories. The students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the project and would love to involve family members and other members of the community in future videos. If you would like to be involved in the project or would like to discuss the project in more detail, please contact Mrs Kerry Bishop; Kerry.Bishopp@education.wa.edu.au
