KMAC Nominated as Finalist for the Indigenous Governance Awards

The Indigenous Governance Awards (IGAs) were created by Reconciliation Australia in partnership with BHP Billiton to identify, celebrate and promote effective Indigenous governance. The national awards highlight success in Indigenous Australia—strong leadership, good management, effective partnerships and brave, creative thinking. The Awards have been running since 2005 and are now run every two years.

This year KMAC has been recognised for its excellent work, having been named as a finalist. Organisations are assessed on five criteria including how innovative their governance arrangements are, self-determination and leadership, cultural legitimacy, capacity to plan for the future and effectiveness in their governance. On the 8th of October the Indigenous Governance Awards judging panel, including Professor Mick Dodson, made a visit to the KMAC office to meet with directors, staff, and Robe River Kuruma community members.

Chairman of the Awards, Professor Mick Dodson said the success of the finalist organisations and their initiatives was in their ability to draw upon traditional governance models to respond effectively to contemporary challenges. “KMAC is a well known organisation that is doing great things, their cultural based approach is of a very high standard,” he said.

Chairperson Sara Slattery said “There’s already massive sense of pride amongst the board and the community members, KMAC are just honoured to be part of the process.”
